The Pasque Flower ( Pulsatilla rubra ), also called Pasque Flower , belongs to the genus of Pasque Flowers ( Pulsatilla ) from the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is native to France and Spain.
Identifying features
The Pasque Flower is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of about 20 to 30 centimeters. The plant has tomentose hairs, its crooked rhizome thickened. The at least twice pinnate leaves have numerous fine tips, the basal leaves are not permanent.
Flowering time is from April to June. The bracts are cut short. The flower stalk is upright, the bracts are lanceolate and dark red-violet on the inside. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.
distribution
The species is endemic to central and southern France and northern and eastern Spain. It occurs at altitudes between 400 and 1500 meters, the plants prefer acidic soils.
Subspecies
The species is divided into two subspecies:
- Pulsatilla rubra subsp. hispanica zimm. ex Aichele & Schwegler , it occurs mainly in Spain, but also in France near the border
- Pulsatilla rubra subsp. rubra , it occurs only in France and Switzerland
