The red Müller-Thurgau is a red berry variant of the long-known Müller-Thurgau grape variety . A particular production-technical advantage of this variety is the lower susceptibility to botrytis compared to the original variety .

Origin, descent

The red Müller-Thurgau was found by the winemaker Christoph Süßle from Merdingen (Baden) in 1978. It is a color mutation of the Müller-Thurgau variety. Since 2005, the variety has been subjected to variety testing in order to record its performance data. In 2014, the application for variety approval was submitted to the Federal Office of Varieties.

Ampelographic features

  • The buds sprout mid-early in spring.
  • The shoot tip is light green, slightly downy with a reddish tinge and completely open.
  • The shoots are strong.
  • The leaf is medium to large in size, blistered, deeply indented with twisted central lobes, strongly serrated, five-lobed and the surface slightly blistered
  • Flowering early to medium with little tendency to trickle.
  • The grapes are large and fluffy.
  • The oval berries are pink in color, have a hard skin and the flesh has a slightly nutmeg-like taste.

Maturity: early, like Müller-Thurgau

Expectations

The variety requires deep, medium to heavy soils with a good water supply. Soils with low water storage capacity and nutrient-poor soils are not suitable. Deep, enclosed layers are unsuitable, but late layers are not.

Yield

The yield is high and regular as with Müller-Thurgau. The sugar content of the berries is medium, with low to medium acidity.

Wine

The variety brings mild wines with a slightly muscat-like smell and taste. They are harmonious and fruity. The wine matures very early. Because of their low acidity, the wines age quickly.

advantages

  • The variety ripens early.
  • It makes low demands on the location.
  • Is also suitable for late locations.
  • It is not very sensitive to flowers.
  • Compared to Müller-Thurgau, it is less prone to berry and stem rot.

disadvantage

  • The ripeness of wood and susceptibility to winter frost as in Müller-Thurgau.
  • The susceptibility to downy mildew, oidium, red burner and phomopsis is the same as in Müller-Thurgau.
  • The berries can easily fall off when overripe.
