Rotherham is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county South Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Rotherham . Other significant places in the borough are Anston , Brampton Bierlow , Brinsworth , Dinnington , Greasbrough , Harthill , Maltby , Rawmarsh , Swinton , Templeborough , Treeton , Wales , Wath-upon-Dearne , Wentworth and West Melton .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Rotherham, the Urban Districts Maltby, Rawmarsh, Swinton and Wath-upon-Dearne and the Rural District Kiveton Park were merged. These local authorities were previously part of the West Riding of Yorkshire county .
In 1986 Rotherham became a de facto Unitary Authority when the central government dissolved the superordinate administration of South Yorkshire. Rotherham remained part of South Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire brigade and public transport.

Rotherham is twinned with Saint-Quentin , France . Further twin cities are Riesa ( Saxony , Germany ), Zabrze in Upper Silesia (Poland) and Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania (Romania).
