The red-mouthed whale fish ( Rondeletia ) are a two species comprehensive genus of deep sea fish , which alone forms the family Rondeletiidae. Its large head is box-shaped and the skin is bare. The lateral line organ consists of pores which are arranged in 14 to 26 vertical rows. The dorsal and anal fins sit symmetrically to each other far back on the body, just before the caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are supported by 13 to 16 soft rays, 9 to 11 for the pectoral fins, 5 or 6 for the pelvic fins and 19 rays for the caudal fin. The fish reach a maximum length of 11 cm. The number of vertebrae is from 24 to 27.
