The red-masked tiger ( Pytilia hypogrammica ), also known as the red-faced aurora-astrild , is an African species from the finch family . No subspecies are distinguished for this species. The red-masked tiger is occasionally kept in Europe as an ornamental bird. The Togo paradise widow is a brood parasite of this species. Occasionally the long-tailed paradise widow is also mentioned as a brood parasite of this species.
description
Red mask astrilde reach a body length of up to eleven centimeters. They belong to the medium-sized fine fin cards. The red face mask, which gives this species its name, is only worn by the otherwise gray and white scaly male. The elytra are golden yellow in the males, in some individuals even red. The female, however, is brown in color. It has golden yellow to red elytra.
Similar to the aurora trild and the Wiener trild , red mask trildes also stay mainly in trees. However, they occasionally come to the ground to forage. The diet consists mainly of grass seeds and insects. The breeding season of the red masked deer in Nigeria falls from October to January. The clutch consists of three to four white-shelled eggs. It is incubated by the parent birds for 13 days. The nestling time of the young birds lasts almost three weeks.
The distribution area of the red macaque trilde is West Africa . Their habitat here are bush and tree savannahs. In the meantime, however, the red masked deer has also opened up human settlement areas as a habitat and occurs in settlements, on paths and in gardens.
attitude
It is unclear when the first red mask trildes were imported into Europe. However, the red mask was mentioned as early as 1879 in amateur literature. Until after the Second World War, red masked tribes were brought back to Europe again and again along with other striped tribes , but remained a rarity overall. Today, red-masked trilde are among the species that are regularly and now frequently imported, but which are only bred regularly by a few enthusiasts.
