The Red Sea Bannerfish ( Heniochus intermedius ) is a species from the butterfly fish family . It occurs in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and lives there in coral reefs down to a depth of 50 meters.
features
The Red Sea Bannerfish can reach a length of up to 18 cm. The fish has a yellow-white, high-backed and laterally strongly flattened body. It is characterized by the front part of the dorsal fin, drawn out into a long, white flag, and the two black horizontal stripes. Pectoral fins, caudal fin, anal fin, the rear soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin and the lower sides of the body are yellow.
Way of life
Adult red sea banner fish always live near the coast and tied to coral reefs (in contrast to Heniochus diphreutes ) alone, in pairs or in small groups. Young fish live in large groups, sometimes together with the schooling banner fish ( Heniochus diphreutes ). They feed on zooplankton and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
