The Rotondo hut is a mountain hut belonging to the Swiss Alpine Club SAC in the canton of Uri in Switzerland . The hut is owned by the SAC section Lägern ( Aargau ).
It is located south of Realp at 2571 m above sea level. M. in an otherwise untouched mountain landscape of the western Gotthard Group and is the starting point for ski tours in winter and for alpine climbing and ice tours and mountain hikes in summer.
history
In 1907, the Urseren corporation ceded a 500 square meter building site with water purchase rights to the Lägern section on the Witenwasseren glacier. The hut, which was inaugurated in September 1909, was a dismantled wooden structure and was transported by train to Göschenen and from there to the construction site with porters, horses and mules. The rectangular, shingled timber structure had two floors (living room and kitchen as well as bedroom on the upper floor).
In 1930 the hut was sheathed windproof with natural stones from the area and a small annex was built on the south side. Another conversion and expansion of the hut to 76 beds took place in 1966. In 1993 the hut was renovated, expanded and in 2010 the east extension was realized.
Access and walks
- From Realp ( 1538 m ) partly on a military road to the Helig Egg in about 3½ hours,
- From Realp in winter through the Witenwasserental and Hinterer Schweig, path marked with poles, relatively safe from avalanches, in a walking time of 3½ to 4 hours
- from the Gotthard Pass in about 5 to 6 hours,
- from the Furkapass in about 6 hours,
- from Villa in the Bedretto valley over the Passo di Cavanna in 5 to 5½ hours.
- Two- day hike Furkapass –Rotondohütte – Cavannapass– Bedrettotal : first stage 6, second 5 hours.
