geography

In Val Bedretto lies the upper reaches of the Ticino River , which takes in numerous mountain streams from both valley flanks, such as the Ri di San Giacomo , the Ri di Bedretto , the Ri di Cristallina and the Foss , which flows down from the Gotthard Pass . The valley extends from the Nufenen Pass to Airolo . It forms the uppermost section of the Leventina Valley .

On the north side, the western mountain range of the Gotthard massif with the Pizzo Gallina , the Chüebodenhorn, the Pizzo Rotondo , the Witenwasserenstock and the Pizzo Lucendro separates the Bedretto valley from the Urserental. On the south side of the Bedretto valley are the mountains of the Ticino Alps with Pizzo San Giacomo and Cristallina (not to be confused with Piz Cristallina in the Adula Alps ).

The Nufenen Pass leads to the neighboring canton of Valais , while old mule tracks lead over the San Giacomo Pass and the Cornopass- Gries Pass into the Italian Val Formazza (Pomatt). Footpaths cross the mountain massifs north and south of the valley. The Cristallinapass, Naretpass, Cavannapass and Lucendropass should be mentioned as regional connections and today as hiking routes .

Most of the valley belongs to the municipality of Bedretto of the same name , which also includes the villages of Ronco Bedretto, Villa Bedretto and Ossasco. The first village in the valley, Fontana, is in the territory of the political municipality of Airolo . The highest village in the valley, All'Acqua, used to be the starting point for the paths over the Nufenen Pass and San Giacomo and was the location of a hospice .

Large avalanches often fall in the Val Bedretto in winter, which means that the valley is occasionally cut off from the outside world.

population

From an economic point of view, the Bedretto Valley was traditionally characterized by the livestock and dairy industry. There are numerous alpine farms on both sides of the valley. Because of the high position of the villages, the yields from potato and rye cultivation were modest. For this reason, the inhabitants of the valley were often forced to work abroad as seasonal workers .

In the 20th century, especially after the Second World War , the valley became heavily depopulated. The project of a railway connection in connection with the Furka base tunnel , with the so-called Bedretto window , could possibly have brought about an upswing, but failed in the political discussion. Today the municipality of Bedretto has just under 70 inhabitants. Numerous holiday guests come to the valley during the summer months.

language

The population of the Bedretto Valley traditionally speaks an Alpine-Lombard dialect.
