The red-shouldered vanga ( Calicalicus rufocarpalis ) is a passerine bird in the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae).

features

The red shoulder vanga is a small, stocky vanga strangler, 14–15 cm tall, 15–17 g in weight. Head cap and neck, back are gray, the iris is pale, the legs are pink. The male has black throat and reins, with white forehead and ear covers, chest and belly are white with pink on the flanks. The wings are brown, the wings are red, the top of the tail is reddish. In the female, throat, breast and belly are ocher, the wing red is paler.

It feeds on small insects that it looks for in thick bushes.

distribution and habitat

The red shoulder vanga is endemic in southwest Madagascar , its habitat are dense euphorbias in the limestone between Toliara and the nature reserve Cap Sainte Marie . It occurs individually or in small family groups, sometimes together with rust-bellied Newtonia or Brown-fronted Newtonia .

The stock is considered to be endangered ( Vulnerable ).
