The brown -fronted Newtonia or brown-fronted Newtonia ( Newtonia archboldi ) is a songbird from the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae) endemic to Madagascar .

The Latin name refers to the American zoologist and ornithologist Richard Archbold .

features

This small vanga strangler is about 12 cm tall, weighs 7–9 g and is similar to the rust-bellied Newtonia . The top is gray-brown with a wide rust-colored band on the forehead and around the eye, a dark beak and a white iris. The short wings are a bit more intense brown, the underside is pale orange, the relatively long legs and beak are dark. In the young bird the orange on the chest is more evident and it has rust-brown wing bands. The iris is bright.

behavior

Brown-fronted Newtonians feed on arthropods including spiders, beetles, termites, and butterflies. They like to look for food together with rust-bellied Newtonia and Timalia in the spiny forest . Fledglings can be seen between November and December.

distribution and habitat

This species is found in the tropical and subtropical dry forest or bushy areas as well as in the thorn forest north of the Toliara province .

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
