The red-tailed glossy tail ( Metallura iracunda ) or gold-glossy tail is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae). The species has a relatively small distribution area in the South American countries Venezuela and Colombia . The stock is on the IUCN (as "critically endangered" Endangered ) classified.

features

The shiny red-tailed tail reaches a body length of about 10.2 cm, with the short, straight beak making up 1 cm. The male is predominantly blackish copper-green with a green shimmering skull. The throat glitters green. The tail is light maroon to reddish purple. The female is colored dark green on the upper side. The underside is yellow-brown with a few brown spots. The tail is like that of the males, with the outer control feathers being streaked with brown-yellow flecks.

behavior

When searching for food they move in the lower and middle strata on the edges of forests, high secondary vegetation , stunted elven forests and often close to the ground in páramo with grass plains and isolated bushes. It has also been observed in dense bamboo Chusquea spathacea , on Espeletia of the species Espeletia perijaensis or Libanothamnus ocultus .

distribution and habitat

Distribution area (green) of the red-tailed glossy tail

Little is known about the redtail shiningtail as it is only found in a very limited area. It has been reported to prefer open, bushy areas and forest edges. They occur in the Sierra de Perijá at altitudes between 2800 and 3100 meters. You can see it at the summit of Cerro Pintado east of Valledupar and at the summit of Cerro de las Tres Tetas near the village of Hiroca. In some areas in Colombia and neighboring Venezuela, it is found at altitudes between 1800 and 3000 meters.

Etymology and history of research

Alexander Wetmore described the red-tailed glossy tail under the current name Metallura iracunda . The type specimen came from the Sierra de Perijá and was collected by Melbourne Armstrong Carriker . In 1847 John Gould introduced the new genus Metallura .

The word Metallura is derived from the Greek words »metallon μεταλλον « for »metal« and »oura ουρά « for »tail«. The specific epithet iracunda is derived from the Latin "iracundus, irascori" for "quick-tempered, angry".
