occupation

Rotten Link (Original title: El Eslabón podrido ) is an Argentine black humoriges horror - film drama directed by Valentín Javier Diment of the year, 2015.

action

El Escondido is a small village in Argentina with just 20 houses. Bad habits prevail in the village, which is far from the next larger city. Sodomy and incest are the order of the day, the village is ruled by superstition. The only technical device is a radio. The prostitute Roberta lives with her mentally disabled brother Raoulo and her sick mother in one of the houses. Her mother warns her not to sleep with every man in the village, otherwise she would bring great misfortune to herself and the village. And so Roberta leaves a suitor out in the village.

When her mother finally dies one day, she repeats her warning on her deathbed. But already on the way back from the funeral she falls into the hands of the suitor she disdains. He raped her. Then she hides with her brother, who is taking care of her. After almost a month in which Rauolo nurses them back up, the two sleep together. Shortly thereafter, Roberta is completely horrified, because her rapist was not the last man in the village she slept with, but her own brother. In desperation, she runs into the village and disturbs a meeting there. A shield comes off and kills them on the spot.

Rauolo brings her body home. In his blind rage he then goes out and kills all the people in the village in a gruesome way. The last one he seeks out is the village priest Arón, who tells him that Roberta's death was an accident. He should blame God or humanity. Then Rauolo asks him if he is God, which the pastor denies. The question “Are you human?” Remains unanswered, because when the pastor fails to speak, Raoulo is the last to kill him. When he has done his deed, he grabs the cart with which he always brought the firewood to the village and leaves the village. On his way he meets two young girls whom he asks if they are “people”. Then he kills her and moves on.

background

The idea came to Sebastián Cortés, one of the screenwriters, when he was on vacation in a small village in the Argentinean mountains and Valentín Javier Diment was telling about the bizarre peculiarities of the villagers. The two filmmakers had the idea of developing a kind of bloody fairy tale that would be reminiscent of the ghost stories of their childhood.

Valentín Javier Diment himself took on the role of the village pastor after an actor had to cancel due to scheduling problems.

The film had its world premiere on August 28, 2015 at the Film4 FrightFest in the UK. The film was shown at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square . This was followed by festival screenings at the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya , the Morbido Film Fest in Mexico and the Imagine Film festival in the Netherlands. On the Sitges he won the audience award. In Argentina itself, the film was released on June 16, 2016. It won the award for best film in 2017 at the Fantaspoa International Fantastic Film Festival in Brazil. There Luis Ziembrowski was also honored as best leading actor.

The film was released in German-speaking countries on February 10, 2017 via the Dutch uncut label Extreme. The mediabook, distributed exclusively in Austria and Switzerland, is limited to 1500 copies and was distributed in two covers.

Reviews

The film builds up slowly and develops from a black, humorous slapstick comedy and village drama to a hard splatter film that breaks its course in the last quarter of an hour. He has received both benevolent and negative reviews from the horror film scene. Katie Bonham wrote in her review for Horrortalk.com that it is a well-produced and well-acted film that disturbs the audience like no other. She called it her favorite film at Frightfest. Howard Gorman also reviewed the film very benevolently for Dreadcentral.com, calling it unconventional and amazingly funny, but it wasn't made for everyone.

However, it was criticized that the film was quite long despite its short running time. In addition, the images are very disturbing, especially the rape and the incest scene.
