The Roy Hill mine is an iron ore - open pit mining in the region Pilbara in Western Australia , which in 2015 started production.
geography
location
The open pit is 115 kilometers north of Newman and 1,100 kilometers from Perth.
geology
The hematite and goethite-containing band iron ore mined comes from the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Chichester Range . It has a low phosphorus content and a high proportion of bound water. Near Roy Hill, the two opencast mines are Christmas Creek mine and Cloudbreak mine of Fortescue Metals Group .
history
The occurrences were discovered in 1992 by the Western Australian exploration company Hancock Prospecting , which received prospecting rights the following year.
A first feasibility study for commercial mining was carried out in 2008. The entire project is expected to cost 10 billion US dollars. The financing was secured in March 2014 with the signing of a loan of 7.2 billion US dollars with a term of 10.5 years.
In 2010 the dredging of the port began. The alignment of the open pit was awarded to Samsung in 2013 for 5.6 billion Australian dollars , so that the first ore could be mined in April 2014. On December 10, 2015, the first ore freighter left the port with a cargo destined for POSCO .
Ownership
Roy Hill is the only iron ore mine in Australia that is not operated by major international mining companies. It is majority owned by Gina Rinehart- controlled Hancock Prospecting, which has a 70% stake in the mining company Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd. In addition, 15% belong to the Korean steel producer POSCO, 12.5% to the Japanese trading company Marubeni and 2.5% to the Taiwanese steel producer China Steel .
STX Corporation , a South Korean trading company, was originally involved in Roy Hill, but it sold its stake to Marubeni in 2012. POSCO was initially the only steel producer with shares in Roy Hill. He reduced his stake by 15% in order to acquire China Steel, a second steel producer, in the mining company.
business
The open pit mine is designed for the extraction of 55 million tons of ore per year. The ore from the open pit is brought to the port near Port Hedland on the 344 km long Roy Hill Railway , where two ore carriers can dock at the same time. The open pit mine will be in operation for 30 years.
