The Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force , or RHKAAF ( 皇家 香港 輔助 空軍 / 皇家 香港 辅助 空军 , Huángjiā Xiānggǎng Fǔzhù Kōngjūn , Jyutping Wong 4 gaa 1 Hoeng 1 gong 2 Fu 6 zo 6 Hung 1 gwan 1 ) was an auxiliary unit of the Royal Air Force based in Hong Kong . In preparation for the transfer of Hong Kong's sovereignty from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China , the entity was dissolved on April 1, 1993.
Although technically, an armed military unit in the ranks of the RAF - Squadron , she was recently involved mainly in the civil sector in the provision of non-military aviation tasks in the colony. This included support for the police, search and rescue tasks, air ambulance and fire fighting from the air.
history
The RHKAAF was established in 1949 as part of the Hong Kong Defense Force . From 1949 to 1950 it was referred to as the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force. The additional title "Royal" was not until 1951 by King George VI. approved. The RHKAAF was finally dissolved on April 1, 1993. From then on, all non-military operations were taken over by the Government Flying Service , in short: GFS, a newly created civilian unit with the original maintenance staff of the RHKAAF. The remaining military tasks were transferred to other RAF units stationed in the colony.
After the transfer of sovereignty in 1997, the military tasks were transferred to the Chinese garrison of the People's Liberation Army stationed in Hong Kong .
The RHKAAF was stationed from 1979 to 1993 at Kai Tak Airport and a branch at Shek Kong Airfield .
The RHKAAF staff were a mixture of full and part-time employees. Most were locally recruited, mostly Hong Kong Chinese in recent years. The ranks were similar to those of the Royal Air Force.
