Rubén Riera

Rubén Riera (* 1957 in Caracas ) is a Venezuelan guitarist .

Riera studied guitar with Antonio Ortega at the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación in Madrid . From 1973 to 1979 he taught guitar at the Conservatorio Vicente Emilio Sojo in Barquisimeto . With a scholarship from the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura (CONAC), he completed postgraduate studies in early music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, specializing in the lute and theorbo under Nigel North . He also had guitar lessons from the composer John Duarte .

From 1982 he studied classical music at the Manhattan School of Music , where he worked with the Brazilian Carlos Barbosa-Lima . Until 1986 he performed mainly as an interpreter of works by contemporary Latin American composers. Among others, Adina Izarra , Alfredo del Mónaco , Julio d'Escriván and Orlando Jacinto García dedicated compositions to him. In addition to his solo activities, he works in Venezuela with the Camerata Renacentista de Caracas and the Collegium Musicum .

In addition to his work as a classical guitarist, Riera also performs as an interpreter of jazz and world music . Here he worked a. a. with Gonzalo Micó , Alonso Toro , María Teresa Chacín and Marujy Muci .
