Ruben Zimmermann (born May 10, 1968 in Nussloch ) is a German Protestant theologian . He is professor for the New Testament and ethics at the University of Mainz with a research focus on ethics, the Gospel of John, parables / parables and miracles of Jesus, and Bible didactics.

Life

Zimmermann studied Protestant theology , philosophy and diaconal science in Erlangen, Bonn, Santiago de Chile and Heidelberg . In 1996 he received the diploma in diaconal science with a medical-ethical, empirical study on the treatment decision of severely damaged newborns. In 1997 he was at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg as a result of at Klaus Berger and Gerd Theissen -built dissertation Dr. theol. PhD. 1999–2001 he was pastor in Heidelberg . In 2003 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich . From 2005 to 2009 he was a professor at Bielefeld University , and since 2009 he has been a professor at Mainz University. He was visiting professor in South Africa ( University of Pretoria ) and the Netherlands ( Radboud University Nijmegen ).

In 2015 Zimmermann was accepted into the ethics project Enhancing Life funded by the American Templeton Foundation .

Zimmermann is married to the university professor Mirjam Zimmermann ( University of Siegen ) and they have four children.

Research topics

Zimmermann works on text-related ethics theory (e.g. narrative ethics) as well as on fields of application of medical and bioethics. He researches early Christian writings on contemporary issues of religion and society. The focus is on:

a) Ethics (e.g. of early Christianity, justification of ethics; narrative ethics, metaphorical ethics, mimetic ethics; doxological ethics, applied ethics, e.g. longevity / longevity discourse)

b) John's Gospel (e.g. metaphor, narratology, figure analysis, Johannine ethics, creation)

c) Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke (e.g. synoptic problem; source of logia; parables / parables and miracle stories)

d) Jesus research - Christology (e.g. Jesus-Memory-Approach; Christopoetics)

d) Methodology and hermeneutics of biblical interpretation (e.g. genre theory; reader response criticism; cultural hermeneutic methods; memory research; the fact fiction problem (see the anthology Text and History)

e) Bible didactics

Zimmermann has published compendia on the parables / parables (2007, 2nd edition 2015) and on miracle stories (vol. 1: 2013, vol. 2: 2017). Together with his wife Mirjam Zimmermann , he published a manual on Bible didactics (2013, 2nd edition, 2018).
