Rudo Schwarz (born October 29, 1906 in Deutsch Gabel , † August 9, 1983 in Heppenheim ) was a German painter, draftsman, photographer and author who became known as an "artist soldier".

life and work

Rudo Schwarz was born as the youngest child of tax administrators Julius Schwarz and Anna Schwarz. After graduating from high school in 1925, he completed an apprenticeship as a photographer and took painting and drawing lessons at the Hauptmann-Sommer private academy in Bohemian-Leipa . In 1938 he married Hertha (née Förster).

As a soldier in the German Wehrmacht, he was deployed in Germany, then in Poland, Greece, Crete and Yugoslavia. In Crete he created two diaries of over 500 pages which, in addition to describing the country and people, also contain around 300 drawings and watercolors. The diary also contains many true-to-scale documentation of excavation sites, wall reliefs and finds from Minoan palaces and other cultural assets. There are also two albums with around 500 photos from this period.

In 1945 he was captured by Yugoslavia as a prisoner of war for four years, with over 100 large-format works that have been lost since then. A diary was also created here, despite forced labor in road construction and mining. In 1949 he returned from captivity and settled in Laudenbach near Heidelberg as a landscape and portrait painter. He completed his last picture in May 1983, three months before his death.

The catalog raisonné is in the Weinheim City Museum . The Kreta Diaries I + II and the Crete Photo Diaries I + II as well as 18 paintings were donated to the Heraklion Historical Museum / Crete in 2008 and today form the “Rudo Schwarz Archive” there.
