The Rudolf Augstein Foundation was founded by the German journalist , publicist and publisher of the Spiegel, Rudolf Augstein . The foundation is based in Hamburg . In the 1960s, Augstein decided that some of his legacy should be used to help people in suffering. The donations from the foundation benefit three areas:

  • Help for people in illness and need
  • journalism
  • art

According to its own information, the Rudolf Augstein Foundation is a medium-sized foundation within the German foundation spectrum. At Augstein's request, the honorary board consists of three members of the Augstein family. Anna Augstein (with whom Rudolf Augstein was married for the last time) is the foundation's chairwoman and responsible for promoting the foundation's artistic interests. Franziska Augstein (a daughter of Rudolf Augstein) deals with the topic of “Help for people in illness and need”. Jakob Augstein (a son of Rudolf Augstein) and editor of the weekly newspaper Der Freitag , as deputy chairman of the board, oversees the journalistic branch of the foundation.

Until 2009 the foundation sponsored the association Reporter-Forum e. V., which awards the German Reporter Prize . In 2019, among other things, the research network Investigate Europe was funded.
