Johann Ludwig Rudolf Durheim (born February 11, 1811 in Bern , † February 15, 1895 ibid) was a Swiss landscape , oriental and genre painting .

Rudolf Durheim was the son of the baker Rudolf Gottlieb Durheim. He became a student of Jean-Léonard Lugardon in Geneva and Ary Scheffer in Paris .

Rudolf Durheim lived in Basel from 1842 to 1846 , then he undertook long trips to Italy and the Middle East ( Egypt , Palestine , Syria ). In 1857 he settled in his hometown of Bern. He was friends with the painter Albert Anker .

In addition to genre representations and portraits, he created numerous landscape pictures while traveling, often from the oriental milieu in oil painting, as watercolors and drawings. In addition to his own works, he made copies of the works of old masters.

In March 1888 he exhibited 120 of his works from the Orient at a special exhibition.

After his death, the Gottfried Keller Foundation bought Durheim's works from his legacy and handed them over to the Bern Art Museum .
