Rudolf Fritsch (born April 25, 1928 in Munich ) is a German veterinarian and former university professor. He is considered to be the founder of modern veterinary anesthesia in German-speaking countries.

biography

Fritsch studied veterinary medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1948 to 1953 . After receiving his doctorate in 1954, he was initially a scientific assistant, and since 1961 senior physician in large and small animal surgery.

Together with his doctoral supervisor Melchior Westhues , he created the first standard work for veterinary anesthesiologists in 1960/61 with the textbook The Anesthesia of Animals .

After his habilitation in 1963, he was appointed to the chair for veterinary surgery at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen in 1980 , where he remained until his retirement in 1992. With his help, the clinic was modernized, including the renovation of the surgery building, which was particularly suitable for large animals, into an adequate small and large animal surgery. This included the first use of an ultrasound device in small animal medicine in Germany.

Outside of teaching, Fritsch was also employed as chairman of the veterinary medicine department of the Upper Hessian Society for Nature and Medicine from 1986 to 1992, and from 1988 to 1989 as chairman of the specialist group for small animal diseases of the German Veterinary Medical Society .

In 1992 the father of several families and grandfather retired.

Honors

In 1990 Rudolf Fritsch received the Friedrich Müssemeier Medal from the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Since 1995 he has been the "Founding Diplomate" (Grandfather) of the European College of Veterinary Anesthesia, and in 2004 he was also awarded the title of "Honorary Diplomate".
