Rudolf "Rudi" Hanke (born January 28, 1903 in Elbleiten ; † August 1975 in Labská Stráň ) was a Czech- German climber and mountaineer who was known for numerous first ascents in Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland and as an opponent of National Socialism.

Life

Rudolf Hanke took an early interest in nature and mountaineering. He started climbing in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains on his doorstep as a teenager. In the years 1922 to 1934 he mastered several first ascents in the Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland. These include u. a. the SW-Weg at the Glatten Turm, the Talweg at the Mönch and the Alte Weg at the Kapellnadel.

Rudolf Hanke joined the KJVD in 1922 and later the KPČ . After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, he supported as Czechoslovak citizens Saxon Mountain Friends of the MCA in the smuggling of illegal propaganda to Germany and at the border crossing of opponents of Nazism.

After 1945, as a German, he had to leave the re-established Czechoslovakia and from then on lived in Tambach-Dietharz in Thuringia . After the visa-free visit to the ČSSR was possible again at the end of the 1960s, he often traveled to his old home in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to climb, including in August 1975 at the age of 73. He did not return to Tambach-Dietharz and was considered missing until March 14, 1976, when a Czech mountaineer discovered his body under snow at the foot of the Belvederes near Labská Stráň.

His funeral took place on April 1, 1976 in Děčín-Folknáře (Falkendorf).
