Rudolf Hofmeister (around 1375 ; † 1451 ) was Meier of the Bishop of Basel and mayor of Bern .

Life

Rudolf Hofmeister called Gräfli was the son of Hans Gräfli, court master of the Bishop of Basel. In 1395 Hofmeister was mentioned for the first time as a resident and citizen of Bern, in 1399 he joined the large council and in 1403 the small council. In the years 1404 to 1417 he served as Meier of the Bishop of Basel, in 1415 he was the leader of the Bieler in the conquest of Aargau. In 1418 he was elected mayor of Bern. He held this office continuously until 1446. During his tenure, he managed to cede Grasburg's rule to Bern and Freiburg. In 1425 he was the banner captain of the Bernese on the successful march into Val d'Ossola.

Rudolf Hofmeister played a decisive role in the construction of the Bern Minster from 1421 onwards. According to the chronicler Konrad Justinger , Hofmeister was present when the foundation stone was laid in 1421. His coat of arms can be found on the lintel of the south west portal of the Bern Minster.

Hofmeister mediated the dispute between the eight places with Milan in 1427, and in 1430 as chairman of the arbitration tribunal to settle the conflict between Lucerne and Vitznau and Gersau. He was a mediator in the Old Zurich War and in 1446 Bern's envoy to the peace treaty in Constance.

His first marriage was from 1422 to Margaretha von Schlatt, and from 1427 to Cäcilia von Reinach .
