Rudolf Lange (born February 4, 1830 in Potsdam , † March 3, 1907 in Karlsruhe ) was a German actor .

Life

Rudolf Lange grew up in the city of his birth and, after his father's death, in Berlin. There he was trained as an actor by Theodor Döring . Lange first played at the Urania Theater before moving to the Roththeater in Karlsruhe. From there, Eduard Devrient signed him to the court theater , to which he belonged until the end of his artistic career. After his debut in 1853 as Lionel in Friedrich Schiller's drama Die Jungfrau von Orleans , Lange played alongside Pauline Mailhac in The Promise behind the Hearth by Alexander Baumann , in later years as Iago in Othello , John Falstaff in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor or in the title role of Richard III. , all by William Shakespeare .

From 1891, Lange also directed. He also gave acting lessons, Bertha Bayer-Braun and Wilhelm Beyer were two of his students. Lange played his last role in The Relegated Students by Roderich Benedix . In early October 1896 he suffered a stroke that paralyzed him on one side and prevented him from continuing his career.

Rudolf Lange was married twice. His daughter Mathilde (1856–1930), who later became the wife of the zoologist Otto Bütschli, came from his marriage to the singer Mathilde Fromm († 1857) . In 1859, Lange married his professional colleague Johanna Scherzer. Their son Hans also worked as an actor and director.
