Alexander Baumann (poet)
Alexander Moritz Baumann (born February 7, 1814 in Vienna , † December 25, 1857 in Graz ) was an Austrian playwright, singspiel - librettist and composer. Baumann had been the archive official of the Austrian Imperial Council from 1856 . As a poet, he first made himself known through songs and romances in Lower Austrian dialect.
life and work
After some time with the Scots he attended the Stiftsgymnasium Melk , which he had to leave again due to poor performance ("because of carelessness").
Then he delivered a number of comedies (partly collected in contributions for the German theater , Vienna 1849), which were characterized by happily invented situations, e.g. B .:
- The Two Doctors (first performance 1840),
- The unnecessary intrigues ,
- Love letters ,
- He is not allowed to go etc.
and he also published Singspiele from the Austrian mountains in Volksdialekt , Vienna 1850, including the popular pieces:
- The promise behind the stove (as the most successful stage work) and
- The Freiherr als Wildschütz (EA 1849), in which the Berlin over-education is opposed to the Austrian good-naturedness.
Later publications by him are:
- Ehrenbuschn for the Austrian army in Italy, z'sambrockt in 102 Schnadahipfln for his liabn brave Landsleit , Vienna 1849, and
- From the home: songs and poems in the Austrian vernacular , Berlin 1857.
Baumann also wrote a number of songs in Austrian dialect, which were published under the title Gebirgs-Bleamln in several books by Anton Diabelli from 1842 . Although Baumann was ignorant of reading and writing music, he also wrote the melodies for most of these songs. One of the songs from this collection with the title 's is anderscht was later used by Johannes Brahms as the basis for the piano accompaniment of his lullaby " Guten Abend, gut' Nacht " op. 49,4.
Alexander Baumann was originally buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof ; on November 27, 1909, a memorial was unveiled by Mayor Karl Lueger at the newly created grave of honor, Group 0, Row 1, Number 56 , at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
