Rudolf Otto von Knüpffer

Rudolf Otto von Knüpffer (February 20th * . Jul / 4. March  1831 greg. In small Marien , † July 10 jul. / 23. July  1900 greg. In Reval ) was a Baltic German architect .

life and work

Rudolf Otto was a son of Pastor Georg Magnus Knüpffer and Anna, geb. of white. He completed his architecture studies at the building school in Saint Petersburg in 1852 . From 1860 to 1878 he was the architect of the Estonia Governorate . During this time he worked temporarily as a Reval city architect. He was also a government engineer at this time and was awarded the Order of Vladimir IV class. The associated ennoblement was confirmed again in 1871. In 1862 he had married Wilhelmine von Krusenstern, a daughter of the polar explorer Paul Theodor von Krusenstern .

Von Knüpffer is particularly known for the renovation and conversion of the houses in Reval's old town in the historicist style that he led. In addition, he realized numerous important architectural projects in the governorate and future Estonian capital.

  • Evangelical Lutheran Nikolaikirche in Hungerburg (1897–1900; destroyed in 1944)
  • Workers' housing for the Balti Puuvillavabrik cotton factory , today: Tallinn, Sitsi tänav 11 (executed 1901–1905)
