Rudolf Salzmann

Rudolf Salzmann (born January 2, 1912 in Bern , † March 30, 1992 in Zurich ) was a Swiss crop scientist . For more than three decades he worked at the Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Institute in Zurich- Oerlikon . His main field of work was potato growing .

Live and act

Rudolf Salzmann, son of a notary and inspector of the cantonal judiciary, completed an agricultural internship after attending a commercial school. After taking private intensive courses , he passed the entrance exam at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich in 1929 . There he studied agriculture and graduated as an engineer-agronomist in 1933 . He then worked for seven years as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Crop Production at this university. During this time he wrote his dissertation on the anthropochores of the Swiss grass-clover industry , with which he obtained his doctorate at ETH Zurich in 1939. Since 1941 he worked as a crop cultivation expert at the Federal Agricultural Chemical Institute (today Research Institute) Liebefeld - Bern .

In 1944, Salzmann took over the management of the potato growing section at the Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Institute in Zurich-Oerlikon. From 1951 to 1977 he was director of this research facility (1968 - after moving to a new building - name changed to: Research Institute for Agricultural Crop Production Zurich-Reckenholz). Salzmann's main interest was potato growing. His most important publication is the book "The most important diseases and pests of the potato and their control" , published in 1950 . It was widely distributed in German and French and was reissued in 1969.

Significant achievements for agriculture in Switzerland gained Salzmann with the introduction of clear rules in the recognition of seeds and seedlings . He played a key role in numerous domestic and foreign specialist organizations, above all in the Swiss Seed Breeding Association and in the Crop Production Commission of the Swiss Agricultural Association. From 1963 to 1966 he was President of the European Society for Potato Research . More than ten years he held as a lecturer at ETH Zurich lectures on the development of Meliorationsgebieten .
