Rudolf Scharpf (2007)

Rudolf Scharpf (born April 21, 1919 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein; † October 25, 2014 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Rudolf Scharpf spent childhood and youth in his home town of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. In 1935 and 1936 he attended the Art Academy in Karlsruhe and the Free Academy in Mannheim, where he studied with Albert Henselmann . From 1936 to 1937 Rudolf Scharpf was a student at the Académie Julian in Paris. After his return to Ludwigshafen, he worked as a freelance artist. Work and military service followed from 1939 to 1943. The first exhibition participations in Ludwigshafen began in 1946. From 1957 to 1962 the artist lived with his family in Spain and in 1963 he established a second residence in south-west France. In 1975 he made extensive trips to Mexico and the USA.

The donation of the parents' house in the Ludwigshafener Hemshofstraße, as well as all works created between 1945 and 1970 to the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein as the Rudolf-Scharpf-Foundation, took place in 1977 with the stipulation of the conversion to the Rudolf-Scharpf-Galerie as well as the representation of one's own and one's Work of others. The Rudolf-Scharpf-Galerie is assigned to the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum and is administered by this and a board of trustees. Much of the artist's work over the past few decades, including his paintings, is in temporary storage in the gallery building.

Rudolf Scharpf last lived in Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

Girl's head, 1962. Woodcut

Rudolf Scharpf was best known as a wood cutter. In fact, the artist had deepened and renewed the expressive possibilities of the woodcut - but not without dealing with many other techniques of sculpture. Rudolf Scharpf's work ranges from early clay sculptures to extensive graphic works, wooden panels, book illustrations and portfolios to large-format paintings from recent decades. Despite the diversity of his work, which can hardly be systematized in terms of quantity, an unmistakably unique style pervades the artist's entire oeuvre - in terms of both expression and form, a handwritten cipher. Works by the artist are in public and private ownership.
