Johann Rudolf Schmid (born September 21, 1822 in Eriswil ; † January 18, 1903 in Burgdorf BE ), reformed , resident in Eriswil, was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician (Radical Party).

Life

Rudolf Schmid, son of the canvas manufacturer Jakob Andreas Schmid (1797–1827) and the Barbara born Schmid (1792–1842), received his first lessons from private teachers , then he attended the canton school in Aarau . After studying chemistry at the Universities of Bern and Giessen and completing a commercial training course, he founded the Schmid brothers in Eriswil with his brothers Gottlieb (1821–1855) and Andreas (1824–1901), which specialize in the manufacture of canvas misplaced. In 1857, an additional company location was built in Burgdorf, where Rudolf Schmid had a representative manufacturer's villa built around 1870 based on a design by the architect Horace Edouard Davinet , which was popularly known as the Schlössli . Rudolf Schmid, who married his cousin Luise (1831–1882) in 1850, died in 1903 at the age of 80. He is one of the leading industrial pioneers in the Emmental .

Political career

The belonging to the Radical Party Rudolf Schmid officiated from 1863 to 1870 as mayor in Eriswil. At the cantonal level, Schmid represented his party in the Bernese Grand Council from 1848 to 1878 , and at the federal level from 1857 to 1863 in the National Council . In addition, Rudolf Schmid was a board member of the Bern Trade and Industry Association and President of the Burgdorf Section from 1878 to 1894, as well as a member of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce.
