history
The core of the castle dates back to the 9th century, when it was a refuge to protect against cavalry attacks by Hungarians. The protective and official castle over Fürth am Berg was first mentioned in a document in 1317 (other sources 1348) as the "Furttenberg Fortress". Bamberg bishops, under whose feudal sovereignty the castle stood, appointed officials from the Franconian and Thuringian knighthood to hold court, to collect tithe and escort duty and to demand compulsory service . Mainly lords of the castle from old Franconian noble families came to the castle, among others from 1359 Berthold Schenk von Siemau , 1383 and 1601 the lords von Schaumberg and from 1502 the lords von Rosenau .
A forest glassworks in the castle area is documented for 1489. The castle was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. It was rebuilt in 1528.
From 1590 to 1601, the Lords of Brandenstein sat in the castle, alternating with the Lords of Würtzburg , who were also in possession of the Mitwitz fief with its two castles.
The castle was last inhabited by the Nuremberg family Pömer von Diepoltsdorf until they moved into a manor in the village in 1660, which also belonged to the Bamberg bishops. Now the castle was uninhabited and was gradually falling into disrepair. In 1740, the Bamberg bishop gave up the official residence and had the estate of the manor divided into parcels and sold to the villagers. The latter used the castle ruins as a cheap quarry. In 1850, the Coburg government finally banned the removal of building materials.
Considerable remains of the castle wall were preserved until 1960, as shown by a pen drawing by Max Schneider. These were demolished in 1960 and overgrown in the following decades.
The first efforts to rid the castle spur of rubble and wild vegetation and to secure the castle stables as a cultural asset were made by Richard Gerlicher from Fürth from 1964 to 1967. In 1980 the Burgstall was placed under protection as a ground monument . In 1989 the Förderkreis Fürther Burg e. V. Several excavation campaigns were carried out between 1991 and 1996. The castle grounds and a well-preserved vaulted cellar are now accessible again.
