The Ahorn Castle is a castle in the town of Maple in Upper Franconia Coburg .

history

Already towards the end of the 11th century a "Ahorny Castle" was mentioned in donation deeds.

She was part of the inheritance of the Polish queen Richeza , the daughter of Count Palatine Ehrenfried of Lorraine and his wife Mathilde , the daughter of Otto II. Upon her death, Richeza bequeathed her property around Coburg, which she had inherited as her mother's marriage property, to Archbishop Anno II . of Cologne , who with him in 1071 furnished the Benedictine monastery in Saalfeld, which he founded . This donation included Berg Coburg , the villages of Füllbach , Creidlitz , Ketschendorf , Trufelistadt , the former imperial farms of Seidmannsdorf , Lauter and Mirsdorf, and the forest near Ahorn Castle.

Ahorn Castle in its current form was built by Joachim von Rosenau after the Peasants' War in 1555 on the remains of the older castle complex. The castle was given its current appearance by the Lords of Streitberg in 1621. Over the centuries, the castle had changing owners: von Schaumberg , Muffel von Ermreuth , von Hendrich, von Baumbach and finally the family of Barons von Erffa , who owned the castle still owns today.

The castle appears in the Renaissance style with round corner towers on the front castle. In the small inner courtyard there is an octagonal stair tower with a spiral staircase, the steps of which are not attached to a column, as is usual, but to a spindle carved in stone. This construction has often been referred to as the 9th wonder of the world . The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.

On the left hand side directly next to the castle there is a manor with farm buildings from the 18th / 19th century. Century. This also includes the sheep farm just a kilometer away, a baroque complex from 1713, which today houses the Coburg Land Equipment Museum.

To the east of the castle is the castle church , which emerged from a Gothic castle chapel, with two magnificent epitaphs by the Lords of Streitberg.
