Maple Castle

Ahorn is a municipality and its main town in the Upper Franconian district of Coburg .

It is located on the southern outskirts of Coburg . The name comes from the maple trees that used to stand in the municipality.

Ahorn is located in the Upper Franconia-West region on the federal highway 303 Coburg - Schonungen . Since the municipal reform, it has consisted of the following parts of the municipality: Ahorn, Finkenau , Hohenstein , Krebsmühle , Schafhof , Schorkendorf , Triebsdorf , Witzmannsberg , Eicha , Wohlbach , Ziegelhütte . The place Siebenwind is also part of it.

history

Until the move to Bavaria

Ahorn was first mentioned in 1074/75 as " clearing farms in the forests of Ahorny Castle". The development is closely related to the history of Ahorn Castle , which Joachim von Rosenau had built in 1555 on the remains of an older castle in the Renaissance style after the Peasants' War .

From 1599 to 1645 Ahorn was owned by the Lords of Streitberg. followed in the following centuries by the lords of Schaumberg , Muffel von Ermreuth , von Hendrich, von Baumbach and finally the barons von Erffa . Ahorn belonged to the Ahorn office of the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg. It came with the Free State of Coburg after a referendum and the subsequent State Treaty on July 1, 1920 to Bavaria.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1971, Schafhof and Wohlbach were incorporated. Schorkendorf followed on April 1, 1971. Finally, on July 1, 1972, the Witzmannsberg community (previously in the Staffelstein district ) was incorporated.

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the municipality grew slightly from 4225 to 4244 by 19 inhabitants or 0.5%. On December 31, 1998, Ahorn had 4631 inhabitants.

Martin Finzel has been (independent) First Mayor of the municipality of Ahorn since 2008. He is supported as a non-partisan candidate by the SPD , Alliance 90 / The Greens and Free Voters . Martin Finzel was confirmed in office in the 2014 and 2020 local elections. Its predecessor was Wolfgang Dultz (SPD), who in turn took over the office in 1988 from Walter Herpich (SPD).

The heraldic shield shows a maple leaf and the stylized Ahorn Castle as a symbol of the community. The colors green and silver of the maple leaf and the castle indicate that the community belongs to the former Wettin Duchy of Saxony-Coburg . The maple leaf and lock are embedded in the colors gold and blue from the coat of arms of the Barons von Erffa family .

In 1998 there were 8 employees in agriculture and forestry, 491 in manufacturing and 52 in trade and transport at the place of work. In other economic sectors 337 people were employed at the place of work subject to social security contributions. There were a total of 1632 employees at the place of residence. There were five companies in manufacturing, mining and the extraction of stones and earth, and two in the construction industry. In addition, in 1999 there were 37 farms with an agricultural area of ​​949 hectares. Of this, 722 hectares were arable land and 227 hectares were permanent green space.

Triebsdorf industrial area

In the outskirts of the municipality of Ahorn, there is a small industrial area with a carpenter's shop, a printing shop and a retailer for catering furniture in the old production site of Möbel-Hoffmann.

  • Ahorn Castle in the Renaissance style with round corner towers. In the inner courtyard there is an octagonal stair tower with a spiral staircase, the steps of which are not attached to a column, as usual, but to a spindle carved in stone. This construction has often been referred to as the 9th wonder of the world. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
  • The castle church , which is structurally connected to the castle, emerged from a Gothic castle chapel. Inside there are two splendid epitaphs from the Lords of Streitberg.
  • Hohenstein Castle in the Hohenstein district
  • Finkenau Castle in the Finkenau district
  • The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Witzmannsberg was consecrated in 1711.

  • The Coburg Land Equipment Museum is housed in the former sheep farm of Ahorn Castle and shows equipment from the rural, craft and early industrial sectors in the former Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha , as well as agricultural equipment from the last 150 years.
