Rudolf Steinwand
Rudolf Steinwand (born August 4, 1906 in Boppard , † November 10, 1982 in Lehnitz ) was a German politician ( KPD , later SED ).
Life
Steinwand came from a family of teachers. He had to interrupt the attendance of the high school and passed his Abitur in 1928 after he had previously been expelled from the French-occupied zone. He had to break off his subsequent teaching degree due to lack of funds. From 1930 he became involved in the KPD and was imprisoned for illegal actions. After the National Socialists came to power and the KPD was banned, he was repeatedly taken into protective custody or interned in concentration camps, but after a while he was released or given amnesty in 1939. In autumn 1941 he had to become a soldier, but was arrested after a short time because he had contacts with the Koblenz resistance group around Andreas Hoevel and was sent from prison to the Eastern Front. There he defected to the Red Army in 1945 and was able to return to Germany a little later.
He became involved in the Soviet zone of occupation and later in the GDR and had a steady career. In 1946 he became a member of the SED and head of personnel in the state government of Thuringia. In December 1948 he was elected by the Thuringian state parliament as a member of the DWK , to which he belonged until 1949. From 1950 to 1952 he was plant director of the Maxhütte (Unterwellenborn) and from 1950 to 1954 belonged to the People's Chamber . In 1952 he became head of department in the Ministry of Ore Mining and Metallurgy, then State Secretary and Deputy Minister for Heavy Engineering. From November 1955 to 1958 he was Minister for Mining and Metallurgy of the GDR. In February 1958 he became a member of the State Planning Commission and head of the basic industry department. He later took on the role of deputy permanent representative of the GDR in the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (RGW) until 1966 .
