Rudolph Edse

Rudolph Edse (born December 14, 1913 in Hamburg , † January 8, 1998 in Worthington (Ohio) ) was a physical chemist and rocket pioneer .

Rudolph Edse's parents ran a pastry shop in Hamburg. His grandfather was David Edse (* 1828 in Wengelwalde ; † 1890). Rudolph Edse studied physical chemistry at the University of Hamburg from around 1931 to 1937. In 1936 he cycled to the Olympic Games in Berlin. He aspired to an academic career, but this was stopped by the outbreak of war.

In 1939, Gerhard Damköhler brought him to work as a research chemist at the Aviation Research Institute in Braunschweig , where he did research on jet and rocket propulsion. In November 1939 he married his cousin Ilsedore Maria Edse (* 1918 in Koblenz), who grew up in Königsberg. In the same year he acquired his Dr. rer. nat. From 1943 to 1945 he was head of the chemistry department.

In September he emigrated to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip , where his family followed the following year. From 1947 to 1950 he worked as a research fellow at Ohio State University on rocket fuels. From 1951 he worked there at the aerospace research department founded by Garvin Leonard Von Eschen in 1946 and initially studied flame speeds. After further studies, he worked here as a lecturer until 1996.
