Rudolph Grosse

Rudolph Grosse also Rudolf Grosse (born January 12, 1879 in Stendal ; † February 7, 1949 there ) was a German local politician, scientist and art collector.

Grosse came from a long-established family of booksellers and publishers in Stendal. In Lübeck he was the town councilor until 1937 and headed the town's legal affairs as the state commissioner of the Hanseatic city. He was also responsible for the areas of transport, trade, shipping, communication and finance.

He was particularly interested in the person of Johann Joachim Winckelmann . In 1938 he organized the first major Winckelmann exhibition. From 1947 until his death, Grosse was managing director of the re-established Winckelmann Society in Stendal.

In 1948, Grosses Schrift Mittelalterliche Holzschnittkunst und Plastik appeared in the Altmark . Grosse was an important art collector who acquired modern art such as von Kollwitz, Liebermann, Munch and Schmidt-Rottluff. His collection is in the Winckelmann Museum in Stendal .
