Rueda de casino

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rueda de casino is a Latin American group dance that is danced to salsa music . Translated, Rueda means wheel and Casino is the Cuban name for the dance salsa, or 'Salsa wheel'. The term 'Salsa Rueda' is sometimes used in German-speaking countries. It is ideal for six to ten couples, but can also be danced with fewer (even with only two) and more couples.

The name Rueda comes from the fact that all couples involved form a circle, where they each dance the same figures synchronously. The rueda or the wheel rotates as a result of partner changes that belong to the danced figures. As with a wheel, a main orientation of all dancers is the center, as the axis, of the wheel. One person makes the cantante (English caller ), the announcer. This determines which figure will be danced next and announces the command for the figure out loud for everyone involved. Occasionally hand signals are also used, especially when it is too loud to hear spoken commands clearly. Rueda is originally from Cuba .

The figures are in contrast z. For example, square dance or round dance , which is also danced to commands, not standardized in the rule so that the Rueda groups not easily different teachers can dance together.

In Havana you can meet a more or less strong group of older Rueda dancers at the matinee every Sunday on the Malecón right next to the tunnel towards Vedado in the Jardines del 1830 restaurant . They claim that they came up with the Rueda de Casino principle around 50 years ago and implemented it for the first time. They often dress completely in white and also have a membership card with the inscription “Fundador de la Rueda de Casino”, which they proudly show.

The name "casino" comes from the fact that salsa originated in the so-called "Casinos Deportivos" in Cuba in the 1950s.

There are also attempts to dance other dances in a rueda, for example Bachata Rueda.
