Rest yard

The Ruhhof (formerly also Ruhehof ) is an estate in Laa an der Thaya in Lower Austria .

According to legend, the farm goes back to the 12th century. The legend derives the name from the fact that - depending on the variant - either King Ottokar, who was seriously wounded after a battle near Laa, or the victorious Emperor Rudolf in this battle is said to have rested at this court.

Originally there was a large mill at this point. The mills built in Laa and Ruhhof directly on the Thaya in earlier centuries hindered the free drainage of water, which on the one hand caused problems during floods, but also because of the creeping silting up of the Thaya, especially since the Pulkau also flowed into the Thaya in Laa. As a result, the Thayamühlbach was dug and the mill of the Ruhhof was operated by the water of the Thayamühlbach.

Count Johann Joseph von Breuner sold the farm in 1724 to the barons Matthias von Suttner , who connected the farm with his estates in Alt-Prerau and Kirchstetten .

In 1835 six families (20 adults and four children) lived on the farm. At that time the farm comprised a residential building, stables and barns and a stately mill. In 1857 a Wilhelm Hoffmann is named as the leaseholder of the mill. In 1872, in addition to a house and a mill, an inn is also mentioned as belonging to the Ruhhof.
