The Schloss Kirchstetten is a castle in the same place Kirchstetten in the town of Neudorf in the wine district .
history
The mighty core structure dates back to the 16th century and was originally a four-wing complex, surrounded by a water-bearing ditch, fortified with walls and small porches. In 1723, the imperial physician Matthias von Suttner acquired Kirchstetten Castle. He had the palace rebuilt in Baroque style according to plans by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach . The U-shaped complex is open to the east, and to the east is the extensive park.
The highlight of the palace is the Fest-Maulbertsch-Saal, named after the creator of the ceiling fresco, Franz Anton Maulbertsch , who created his most important youth work for Kirchstetten from 1750 to 1752, The Triumph of Truth over Time . On the front walls of the hall there are two large-format portraits of the Rococo painter Franz Anton Palko of the Suttner family.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Bertha von Suttner also visited her relatives several times in Kirchstetten Castle. After 1945 the Suttner family left the castle and the building remained uninhabited and unused for decades. During a break-in in 1975, the weapons collection, parts of the furniture and the altar painting by Kremser Schmidt were stolen from the castle chapel.
An investment company began to build a thermal bath with a spa hotel between the castle and the park. The company went bankrupt and left a shell.
The castle today
The castle was partially renovated for the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition held in 1998 under the motto “rebellious & adapted - women's life in Austria”. Since 1999 the classical music festival "Culture in Kirchstetten Castle" has taken place every summer.
The castle can be visited by prior arrangement and during the classical music festival.
