The Shweli ( Burmese : ရွှေ လီ မြစ် , Shweli Myit, sinized 瑞丽江 , Ruìlì Jiāng [ ʐweɪ̯˥˩li˥˩ʨjɑŋ˥ ], Shan : Nam Mao, in the upper reaches Chinese  龙川 江 , Pinyin Longchuan Jiang ) is a river in Southeast Asia . It flows through western Yunnan in the People's Republic of China and northern Myanmar and is one of the three major tributaries of the Irrawaddy . It flows through tropical areas.

course

The river rises as Longchuan Jiang in the north of the prefecture-level city of Baoshan , near the border with the Kachin state of Myanmar , flows through the city in a north-south direction, then turns west towards the Dehong autonomous district of the Dai and Jingpo , flows through there the independent city of Mang and changes its name to Ruili Jiang when entering the independent city of Ruili . Under this name it forms the border to the Myanmar Shan state , before entering it entirely, where it is called Nam Mao or in Burmese Shweli Myit . It flows through the north of the state in a north-westerly arc, almost parallel to the border of the Kachin state, and then turns west to flow into the Irrawaddy. The last 10 kilometers run in the area of the Sagaing Division , after the river had already formed the border between Shan State and the Sagaing Division for around 50 km.

Remarks

  1. What is meant is a borrowing of the Burmese name Shweli into Chinese in a form that can be represented with Chinese characters, analogous to the Germanization of foreign words.
