The ruin Grünenberg near Hitzkirch is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 480  m above sea level. M. in the Lucerne Seetal .

The only existing as a ruin Lower Lieli or castle Grünenberg as to their future owners, the lords of Green Mountain was called, has a checkered history.

In 1237 Grünenberg Castle was built by the Counts of Kyburg . Its creation was related to the emergence of the trade route through the Seetal to Lucerne and over the Gotthard . With its excellent location, it dominated the wide area and secured sovereignty in the upper valley.

Further development

  • Around 1360: The castle comes into the possession of the Lords of Lieli .
  • In 1386 the castle, like the town of Richensee at its feet, was destroyed by the Habsburgs in the run-up to the Sempach War.
  • Knight Hemmann I. von Grünenberg rebuilt the castle; the plant takes its name.
  • In 1437 his nephew Wilhelm von Grünenberg sold the castle to the Heidegg lordship.
  • Around 1700: The canton of Lucerne acquires Heidegg and with it Grünenberg.

In the 18th century the castle fell victim to a fire. In 1815 part of the castle was demolished and the stones were used for building purposes.
