history

The name of the Hornburg, first mentioned in a document in 1140, refers to the location on a "horn", which means the rocky summit of the Hornberg, which is about 900 m above sea level. The castle was originally owned by the Counts of Görz until, in 1304, Heinrich Graf von Görz sold the castle to Captain von Wolfsberg , Hermann Siebenbürger. In 1315 the property of Nikolaus and Andreas von Hornburg was sold back to the Gorizia. In 1414 the complex was significantly expanded and fortified. In 1430 a Horburger appears again as lord of the castle with Konrad, but soon afterwards it was again in the hands of the Counts of Görz, who in 1461 transferred their property to Emperor Friedrich III through the Peace of Pusarnitz . had to pass. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Hornburg was an imperial fiefdom until the castle and lordship were sold to Sigmund Welzer von Eberstein in 1581. At that time, this also included a hammer mill in Klein St. Paul and the blown mills in Eberstein. In 1630 Georg David Christalnigg took over the property. The castle complex was already in decline at the end of the 17th century.

The property remained the property of the Christalnigg family until 1939, when it was sold to the Riedl family.

Building description

The hilltop castles belong to the Castle type of summit castles . The central structure of the Upper Hornburg is a mighty, two-story Fried , a permanent house built in the first half of the 12th century with an entrance gate on the upper floor. This tower was surrounded by a wall built in 1414 with a round tower. Loopholes and approaches to the battlement can still be seen in this .

In front of the castle is the rest of a small chapel , which was mentioned in a document in 1285 as Ecclesia in Hornberg . From 1581 onwards a Lutheran preacher appointed by the Welzers worked here . However, this sacred building was described as ruinous as early as 1616.

The semicircular tower of Niederhornburg stands on a hill away from the Upper Hornburg. From the lower Hornburg there are only small remains of the wall of a permanent house built in the 12th century in the east of the former Bering and a residential house from the 13th or 14th century.
