Tursenstein ruins

The castle Tursenstein , Barren Castle or Stein am Kamp called, is the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle in the town of Altenburg in the district of Horn in Lower Austria . The castle ruins are under monument protection ( list entry ).

location

The castle ruins are located on the so-called Kleine Umlaufberg , a towering rock cone that partially slopes downwards to the Kamp, 1.7 kilometers south-southeast of Altenburg. The castle hill on the left bank of the river is washed by the river on three sides and is only connected to the northern hinterland by a narrow, saddle-like bridge.

history

The Counts of Poigen-Rebgau are considered to be the founders of the castle. The foundation can be assumed in the period after the defeat of Mailberg (1082). After several changes of ownership, Stein am Kamp Castle came to the Tursen before 1337. In 1337 Reinprecht von Turs received permission to rebuild and expand the castle. In 1396 Duke Albrecht IV handed the castle over to Altenburg Abbey , which was able to demolish the seat in exchange for considerable compensation. As early as 1419, reports were made of "the desolate place where Tursenstain Castle once stood".

description

Only remnants of the wall remain from the originally triangular castle.
