Rukban , sometimes transcribed as Rakban , Arabic الركبان, DMG ar-Rukbān or ar-Rakbān orالرقبان / ar-Ruqbān , is a dry, remote area in Syria near the extreme northeast of Jordan , near the common borders with Syria and Iraq .

The area became a refugee camp for Syrians in 2014 . Rukban is located in the demilitarized strip north of the Jordanian-Syrian border wall, a no man's land .

history

Rukban is a completely dry and remote area that has been inhabited by a number of Syrian refugees since 2014. By 2016, Jordan took in refugees at multiple border crossings along the border with Syria, and the country had taken in over 1.4 million Syrians by 2016. This specific border crossing was inhabited by asylum seekers as Jordan blocked access, but it allows around 50 to 100 of them to enter the country after strict scrutiny; the government cites security concerns over information about the existence of hidden Islamic sleeper cells.

The UN did not acknowledge any particular or additional security concerns raised by the residents of Rukbans, but the organization urged Jordan to immediately allow refugees in Rukban access to the land. UNHCR's Melessa Flemming said: "UN officials accept that Jordan has legitimate security concerns, but the UN continues to urge Jordan to allow the residents of Rukban to enter Jordan". The number of Syrians there rose to 75,000 in 2016, becoming a de facto camp, which in 2015 received heavy criticism and condemnation of Jordan from Human Rights Watch (HRW).

In 2019, a representative of the WFP described the humanitarian situation as dramatic.
