The first Latin school in Wangen, to which the Rupert-Neß-Gymnasium goes back, was first mentioned in a document in 1329. From the 16th century there was also a "German primary school" for younger boys; from around 1675 there was also one for girls, who usually did not attend Latin school afterwards. At the beginning of the 17th century, school lessons were brought into line with the Jesuit grammar schools , but only the first level (grammar) was taught. In the 18th century, an average of 70 boys went to the “German elementary school”, and only slightly fewer went to the girls' school. For a long time there was only one class of 20 to 40 students at the Latin School. 1714 Today's namesake wanted Rupert Ness , abbot of the Empire pen set Ottobeuren, a fully equipped gymnasium; This failed, however, because of the negative citizenship of Wangen, probably afraid of an excessive financial burden. In 1845 the establishment of a “secondary school branch”, in which subjects such as physics and geometric drawing were introduced, was approved. Both school trains initially only had one class each. The secondary school then grew rapidly, so that several classes were set up there first. In 1928 the school moved to today's main building, the "old building". During the time of National Socialism , the school became a full establishment, so that in 1940 the first graduate class (after eight years of high school) was passed. In October 1945, after the Second World War, school lessons were resumed. From 1949, nine years of high school are recorded. The main building has been expanded several times since 1958. In 1961 a separate secondary school was set up. In 1975 the school was finally given the name "Rupert-Neß-Gymnasium". This name prevailed against the Spiegler, Eichendorff and Stauffenberg high schools.

Choice of subjects / profiles

From the sixth grade onwards, students have French or Latin as their second foreign language.

From the eighth grade onwards, there are different profiles: a music (music as a four-hour major), a natural science ( science and technology as a four-hour major) and a linguistic (since 2018 Spanish (previously French) as a four-hour major). In order to choose the musical profile, the music profile must be attended from the 5th grade onwards.
