Rupert Charles Barneby (born October 6, 1911 in Monmouthshire , England , † December 5, 2000 ) was an American botanist and author .

biography

Barneby was born in Monmouthshire , England . He attended Cambridge University , where he received a BA in History and Modern Languages in 1932 . In 1937 he moved to the United States, where he lived until his death. Barneby became a US citizen. Barneby worked in the New York Botanical Garden from the 1950s until shortly before his death . His longtime partner was Harry Dwight Dillon Ripley (1908–1973).

Barneby published books throughout his professional life, describing over 1,100 new plant species. Over 25 plants are named after him, as well as the genera Barnebya , Barnebyella , Barnebydendron and Rupertia . His main area of ​​interest in botany was the Leguminosae plant family as well as the Menispermaceae plant family . Barneby received several awards in the field of botany .
