Russell Henderson

Russell Henderson , MBE (born January 7, 1924 in Port of Spain ; † August 18, 2015 ) was a Trinidadian pianist and musician on the steelpan .

Russel Henderson grew up in Belmont . In the mid-1940s he formed a jazz combo, the Russell Henderson Quartet , with which he performed and soon became known nationwide. In 1951 Henderson traveled to London to study piano at the North London Polytechnic on Holloway Road.

He then settled in England and had a great influence on the spread of Caribbean music in Great Britain . Together with Mervyn Constantine and Sterling Betancourt he founded the first steel band in England and made a decisive contribution to the foundation of the Notting Hill Carnival . 1968 was involved in recordings by John Surman . Henderson also taught in schools in London.

In 2006 Henderson was awarded the Order of Member of the British Empire .
