Russell Jacquet

Russell Jacquet (* 4. December 1917 in St. Martinville , Louisiana ; † 28. February 1990 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American jazz - trumpet player and singer.

Life

Russell Jacquet was the older brother of the tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet , with whom he worked several times during his career. Jacquet first played in the bands of Floyd Ray and Milt Larkin before studying music at Wiley College and Texas Southern University . He then worked in his brother's band around 1945/47, then founded his own formation, which was the house band of the New York Cotton Club from 1945 to 1949 , and finally returned to Illinois Jacquet's band. He later played with various formations in Oakland and Houston with Arnett Cobb and several times with his brother.

Although he ran his own record label ( Town Hall ) in the 1970s , he only recorded a few titles under his own name in the course of his career. He led several sessions for the Globe, Modern Music, Jewel, Sensation and King labels in the 1940s ; Among other things, he played on these recordings from 1945 to 1949 with Sweets Edison , Teddy Edwards , Dexter Gordon , Chico Hamilton , JJ Johnson , Charles Mingus , Joe Newman , Leo Parker , Sonny Stitt , Sir Charles Thompson , Lucky Thompson , Gerry Wiggins , Shadow Wilson , Gerald Wilson and Snooky Young .
