Russell Metty

Russell Metty (born September 20, 1906 in Los Angeles , California - † April 28, 1978 in Canoga Park , California) was an American cameraman .

Life

He began his career in the film business in 1925 as an assistant for the Standard Film Laboratory. Four years later he was recruited by the film production company RKO Pictures and began working there in the early 1930s, initially as a second camera operator, and from 1932 as a camera operator. In 1934 he made West of the Pecos , his first film as a lone cameraman. From then on, Russell Metty was always busy in the film business and was involved in more than 150 productions until the end of his life. In every year since 1934 he has appeared in at least two productions. He made two films with Orson Welles , In 1946 The Trail of the Stranger and 12 years later In the Sign of Evil . He worked with director Douglas Sirk on a total of ten films. In the last decade of his career he worked primarily for television productions, so he acted as cameraman for 56 episodes of the television series The Waltons . He was also involved in several episodes of the Columbo series.

In 1961 he was awarded an Oscar for his work on Spartacus . A year later, he received an Oscar nomination for the film Almond Eyes and Lotus Blossoms .
