Russell Oberlin

Russell Keys Oberlin (born October 11, 1928 in Akron , Ohio , † November 26, 2016 in New York City , New York ) was an American countertenor .

Life

The son of the married couple Mary Ethel Keys and John Russell Oberlin had sung in various boys' and children's choirs as a child. At the age of 14, Oberlin's voice changed to baritone , and two years later he sang tenor . After graduating from John R. Buchtel High School in Akron , Ohio in 1946 , he studied singing at the famous Juilliard School of Music in New York City , where he graduated in 1951. At that time Oberlin only sang in the normal tenor register.

It was only as a member of the New York vocal and instrumental ensemble The Pro Musica Antiqua , founded in 1953, that Oberlin tried his hand at the alto position. He was so successful with this that he was soon widely regarded as a countertenor .

Oberlin was best known for its interpretations of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods . His recording of arias by Georg Friedrich Handel became world famous. Oberlin has performed, among others, along with the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould : The joint recording of Cantata BWV 54 Resist but the sin of Johann Sebastian Bach is a rare film document the art of singing Oberlin on the DVD Hereafter , a documentary about Glenn Gould by bruno monsaingeon to see .
