Russell Square is an underground station on the London Underground . It is located in the London Borough of Camden and is served by the Piccadilly Line . In 2013, 12.95 million passengers used the station. The main entrance is not on Russell Square itself, but on Bernard Street. Important buildings of interest include the British Museum and the Birkbeck College of the University of London .

The station located in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 was opened on December 15, 1906 by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway , the predecessor company of the Piccadilly Line. The platforms can now be reached either via one of the three elevators or via a 175-step spiral staircase. The architect in charge was Leslie Green , who designed a total of 28 stations for the Underground Electric Railways Company of London at the beginning of the 20th century .

A bomb exploded on July 7, 2005 between King's Cross St. Pancras and Russell Square stations . In a coordinated action, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in his backpack. Other bombs exploded on the Circle Line at Aldgate and Edgware Road and on a bus in nearby Tavistock Square . 28 people died on the Piccadilly train alone. The line partially reopened on July 8th, but the central section between Hyde Park Corner and Arnos Grove remained closed until August 4th.
