history

former Nazi tent camp

The name "Russenwiese" became common after the First World War , after a camp for Russian prisoners of war had been built there during the war .

Some twenty years after the end of World War I were the time for the party rallies turn large camp for the participants of the working crowd and KDF established programs.

A report by the fire police from 1939 states that the Russenwiese camp was occupied by 24,000 men in the period from September 5 to 12, 1938. During the Second World War , the Gestapo ran a so-called labor education camp there . For the period from October 1942 to August 1943, occupancy figures of around 2000 mainly Eastern European prisoners who were used for forced labor were reported. The conditions of this penal camp were with those in the concentration camps of the SS comparable. After the end of the war, Paul Ohler, among others , was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Nuremberg Higher Regional Court.

During night air raids with more than 600 British bombers on 10/11. and 27./28. August 1943 the camp was hit. The victims are buried in one of the mass graves in the Nuremberg South Cemetery . The camp was then moved to Langenzenn in the Fürth district .

Occasional witnesses reported regular forced abortions on Polish female forced laborers.

today

Russenwiese near Fischbach today

Nature has now recaptured the Russenwiese with flora and fauna. Light and noise pollution as well as constant traffic pollution have prevented large mammals or wild game from returning to the area. The meadow area is mowed once a year. Today nothing is reminiscent of the recent historical past or the historical geotypical diversity. Today the meadow is used for leisure by humans and animals. Some cycling and hiking trails lead through the area. Tents and campfires are not permitted due to, among other things, unsolved problems with garbage disposal, as well as the feared pollution with faeces, the risk of fire and the disturbance of breeding birds.
